Schadenfreude and Extraverted Feeling

Schadenfreude is one of those German words that doesn’t have a direct translation. It means “joy in another’s misfortune”.

Whole branches of comedy (slapstick) and TV shows (all of Reality TV in my opinion, but definitely “candid camera” and “funny home videos”) are built on this concept.

I watched this video of a “kitten going beserk” on facebook recently, and you’ll have to see for yourself how high it jumps and how many times it contorts itself in horror. While the people taking the video were laughing, my first thought was – hope it didn’t hurt itself.

And that got me wondering about my sense of humor (or lack thereof), my sense of Schadenfreude, my preferences for Extraverted Feeling, and how they may be connected. [Read more...]

Awareness, Gratitude, and Human Rights

While the news are buzzing with Angelina Jolie’s op-ed in the New York Times, I’m reminded of a few things:

1. I’m grateful for free speech

Although I do not agree with the many negative comments this article has received, everyone is free to speak their mind.

2. I’m grateful for available health care

Yes, there are better systems than in the US, but there are certainly many that work even more poorly.

3. I’m grateful for the times we live in

My mother’s generation would probably not have been able to openly discuss the feelings and worries that are part of this medical journey. [Read more...]

United Nations Head Offices in New York City

The UN headquarters in New York are international territory with their own fire department, police force, and postal office. The Rose Garden (currently under construction) grows flowers from every country. The tall building is the Secretariat, the lower building on the left with the dome on top is where the General Assembly meets.

The United Nations has six principle branches:

  1. General Assembly
  2. Security Council
  3. Economic and Social Council
  4. Secretariat
  5. International Court of Justice

How did you get to school?

Growing up in rural Germany, I vividly remember riding my bike everywhere. There’s even a memory of me sitting in a childseat on the back of my Mom’s bike as she took me to Kindergarten stuck in the recesses of my mind.

When I visited the UN headquarters in New York recently, the following pictures completely grabbed my attention.
